Faith Formation

Faith formation has evolved significantly in the 21st century. Traditionally, Sunday school
followed a "school model" established in the early 1800s, using the Bible as a textbook to teach
children how to read. This model thrived because Sunday was a day free from official work,
making it an ideal time for instruction. Volunteers led lessons centered on biblical stories to
teach literacy.

Today, with reading taught in public and private schools, congregations can focus on their true
mission—nurturing faith. Instead of "teachers," we have leaders, and instead of "classes," we
have groups. These groups generally meet at 9:00 AM on Sundays in the Fellowship Hall or
Faith Formation Wing, though some may gather at other times.

Our Approach to Faith Formation
Faith formation is about more than learning—it’s about experiencing faith in a welcoming
community. Our leaders are dedicated to:

  • Creating a welcoming space where everyone feels a sense of belonging, following
Jesus’ model of love and hospitality, especially toward children.
  • Providing meaningful experiences that help participants grow in faith. Rather than
traditional lessons, leaders engage groups through storytelling, crafts, music, movement,
    prayer, and faith sharing.

Safety and Participation
The safety of our participants is a top priority. All faith formation leaders are faithful followers of
Christ who have undergone criminal background and child abuse checks. For members under
18, a parent or guardian must provide emergency contact information and signed photo
permission slips.

Faith Formation Groups
We offer a variety of faith formation groups to meet the needs of all ages and interests. Most
groups meet at 9:00 AM on Sundays, including:

  • Nursery Faith Formation – for children under six
  • Children’s Faith Formation – for children in first through fifth grade
  • Youth Faith Formation – for youth in sixth through twelfth grade
  • College Faith Formation – for young adults attending college and may be away from
    home.

In addition, we provide specialized faith formation opportunities that meet at different times and
locations, including:

  • Confirmation Faith Formation – for youth preparing to become full members of the body
    of Christ at Good Shepherd
  • Bible Study Faith Formation – for those interested in exploring Christian scripture in
    depth
  • Prayer Faith Formation – for those who wish to nurture their prayer life and pray for
    group concerns
  • VBS Faith Formation – a vibrant summer program for children and youth, engaging the
    broader community during school break

Measuring Success
We gauge our impact through attendance and offerings recorded from Monday to Sunday,
accommodating groups that meet outside of Sunday mornings.

Faith formation is a lifelong journey, and we are committed to fostering a community where faith
grows through connection, exploration, and shared experiences. We invite you to join us as we
walk this path together.
